I struggled with Unity's lighting system for a long time. Every time I'd get the courage to delete the default skybox and directional light, my scene's visibility would completely break. Then I'd try dopping in a few random types of lights, and it'd look like crap, and I'd and run back to the defaults.

All it took was one fantastic tutorial series. Huge credit to rbarazza's Creative Coding in Unity series. Perhaps the single best Unity tutorial I've come across, and criminally underviewed.
